Synopsis

Early on the morning of 20 May 1847, the "Bark Ajax" weighed anchor in Dublin harbour with 258 passengers on board facing a six-week crossing of the North Atlantic to what they hoped would be a land of promise somewhere in Canada. Vessels constituting what has aptly been called the coffin fleet transported over 100,000 immigrants in panic flight from famine, fever and conditions involving deprivation of all human rights. Greedy captains and shipping agents were responsible for the crowding which resulted in much suffering and enormous loss of life on the ocean. Within a year after landing in Canada one of the passengers of the "Ajax" published a diary that gives remarkable details about the voyage from Dublin to Grosse Ile, the Canadian quarantine station. The passenger signed his name as Robert Whyte. Whyte was a Protestant gentleman of education and position as well as a professional writer who intended to publish his diary. The diary appeared in print in 1848. It is signed in the author's own handwriting and features vivid descriptions of the spectacular scenery along the St.Lawrence River and striking delineations of the passengers, including the captain and his wife, the crew and the suffering travellers. The reader cannot but be moved by this vivid and real account of life and death aboard a coffin ship.

I visited Ireland last year...a wonderful country and people, but I learned much about "The Famine" that both surprised and depressed me. A truly amazing story of courage born of desperation, starvation, poverty and the will to survive. The story is not all bad though. There are many interesting stories too, including how a certain Ford production model got it's very Irish name (pg 67) that just about everybody knows. A very good read, a very good history lesson about the early U.S, immigrants who came legally not to take, but to build. Do read this one!

This is the published diary of a man traveling in the captain's quarters of a ship carrying Irish immigrants to North America. There are some scenes that won't leave you: the description of leaving home and saying good-bye forever, the appalling sickness of a young mother down in steerage where disease was rampant. And most of all the difference in the living (and dying) conditions on the voyage between the captain's family and the families below, who were little more than livestock. Less than livestock, really, since they were responsible for feeding themselves. Even livestock are fed and watered.

A little depressing, but I guess you can see that from the title.

Great story of the Irish Migration

Excellent insight into the journey; the conditions of those on-board, the steady growing list of the dead, even a good understanding of the St. Lawrence River environment
